It is used for constipation by making your stools softer and easier to pass. It works by drawing water into the intestines. It is also used for hepatic encephalopathy (a decline in brain function that occurs as a result of severe liver disease) by decreasing the amount of ammonia in the blood.
Lactulose is an osmotic laxative which relieves constipation by causing an accumulation of water in the stool, softening it, and thus making it easier to pass.
